Vascular neurosurgery is a subspecialty of neurosurgery that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord. Vascular neurosurgeons are medical doctors who have completed specialized training in neurosurgery and are skilled in performing complex surgical procedures to treat conditions such as aneurysms , arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and cerebral artery stenosis.
A neurovascular surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that treats damaged, injured, or malformed blood vessels that cause bleeding or circulation issues. Usually, it is used to treat blood vessels in the brain or spinal cord.
Neurovascular disease affects the blood vessels of the brain and spine. Neurovascular disease is caused by obstruction of the arteries. Symptoms of neurovascular diseases include narrowing of the arteries, which reduces blood flow to the brain and ultimately increases stroke risk. The arteries and veins circulate blood throughout the body. Arteries are the leading carriers of oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the entire body, and veins bring blood back to the heart.
Aneurysms: A bulge or swelling in the wall of a blood vessel that can rupture and cause bleeding in the brain.
AVMs: A tangle of abnormal blood vessels that can cause bleeding or disrupt normal blood flow to the brain or spinal cord.
Cerebral artery stenosis: Narrowing of the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain, which can increase the risk of stroke.
Carotid artery disease: Blockages or narrowings in the arteries that supply blood to the head and neck, which can increase the risk of stroke.
Occasionally, endovascular therapy is used to treat vascular disorders as part of the preoperative workup or as an adjunct to surgery. This procedure is typically performed by neurosurgeons or interventional neuroradiologists.
A catheter is used during endovascular neurosurgery to take pictures of the brain (cerebral angiogram), and coils, glue, and stents are placed if needed.
For patients with needs for vascular neurosurgery, Endovascular neurosurgery can be determined by your doctor .
